All central universities will have four-year undergraduate courses


The Ministry of Education plans to implement four-year undergraduate programs (FYUPs) in all central universities across the country. While the UGC is in discussions with the central universities, the ministry has asked the rectors to start planning the implementation of FYUP.

The Education Ministry wants the discussion to start before the final decision is made in order to ensure a swift and smooth implementation, the IANS news agency reported.

Central universities will be allowed to organize their regular three-year graduation programs with FYUP. Students will also have the option of multiple entry and exit systems. Students will be allowed to leave a diploma or course and obtain a corresponding certification on the same. He / she can then resume studies where they left off. This was provided as part of NEP 2020.

Pradhan reportedly told rectors of all central universities that “you have autonomy over how to do it. How you are going to deploy it is up to you. By next year, everyone should decide on their own process on this topic. ” The ministry said that while the process will take time, the system needs to be moved forward.

The minister also held a meeting with the rectors of all central universities, many of whom have decided to introduce FYUP at the next academic session.

The Education Ministry also tried to implement the process in 2013, but faced protests from several students and academics who said the four-year programs would not be feasible for students in the lower strata. weaker society financially. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that this time, as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the usual three-year UG course and two-year PG course will be there, and the four-year course will be added as an alternative.

The University of Delhi (DU) also plans to adopt the policy from the next academic year, said Yogesh Singh, DU’s newly appointed vice-chancellor. Students will now have the option of choosing whether they want a three-year honors bachelor’s or four-year honors or four-year honors in a discipline with research, the VC said. He also added that FYUP will have a flexible schedule and students will be able to choose programs according to their interests.
