Trigger warning! This article discusses topics related to sexual assault allegations.
After becoming a fan favorite of Michelle Young’s season the bachelorette, Joe Coleman is now accused by a former college friend of allegedly committing sexual assaults when he was a top basketball player and student at the University of Minnesota. Bachelor Nation fans got to know Joe on the bachelorette season 18 as a 28-year-old real estate developer from Minneapolis, MN. Joe and Michelle both played basketball in college and lived in Minnesota. So he immediately got noticed by fans as a potential favorite on the show.
Things took a turn when Michelle revealed that she had already messaged Joe back in the day and then been “Phantom” by him on social media. She commented on how weird it was to see him on the bachelorette since she thought he wouldn’t be interested in her. Joe then explained himself and apologized for his lack of response. In turn, Michelle took him at his word and kept him on the show. As the season went on, Joe did very well and qualified for the last three of the bachelorette. Nonetheless, Michelle opted to take Nayte Olukoya and Brandon Jones to the finals and eliminated Joe in third place.
Now, an anonymous individual has started a thread on Reddit accusing Joe Coleman of alleged college sexual assault. As seen in the full thread below, the original poster claimed to have attended the University of Minnesota between 2012 and 2013, which is around the same time Joe was there. The poster claimed to have attended several “basketball nights” that took place on campus and recalled that “Joe was a big local idol.” The author of this thread explained how exciting it was to be invited to a college basketball party because she and all her friends “had a crush on Joe.” However, the original poster noted that his views on Joe quickly changed, noting that “It became clear that [Joe] wasn’t a safe guy to be around” once she was able to meet him in person. The poster recalled, “One night a girl I was with came out of a back bedroom and told me she had been sexually assaulted by him.” The OP added that “there was another girl there comforting her that Joe had done the same to her before.” As of this writing, the Reddit thread has received 1,300 upvotes and the identity of the original poster has reportedly been verified by mods at r/thebachelor.
Some fans have speculated that Michelle and Joe were exes before the bachelorette, but these rumors were shut down by Michelle herself. The author of this new thread on Reddit claimed that “The girls who regularly hung out with them warned us not to go alone with Joe.” The original poster said that even after Joe left the University of Minnesota, “Several local sportswriters tried to get students to talk about Joe Coleman because they had heard stories themselves.” However, this poster believes a police report was never filed against Joe. So when Joe was chosen the bachelorette season 18, this Redditor “felt sick seeing her face again and contacted some of Michelle’s friends” that they would have known. Alas, this person does not know if Michelle heard these claims during filming.
Towards the end of the thread, the original poster claimed that she was waiting for someone else to raise these allegations upon hearing that Joe had been cast. the bachelorette. But when no one else brought up Joe’s alleged college behavior, the original poster felt compelled to bring up those claims they’d heard about in the past. In the comments, many fans sided with the original poster and thanked that person for speaking up. Screen Rant contacted Joe Coleman for comment.
