Coursera to Introduce Online Computer Science Undergraduate Degree


Coursera, a California-based online education company, will release six new online courses, which will be fully equivalent to on-campus degrees, bringing their total number of courses to 10.

This will be the first time that the promoter of online education will offer an undergraduate degree or a bachelor’s degree in computer science. The University of London offers the course on the Coursera platform.

The courses offered by Coursera started in 2016 and are fully equivalent to full-time degrees taken on campus, thus promising students not only training but also university certification, which is crucial to ensure quality jobs.

“While talents are evenly distributed around the world, opportunities are not, and this is a serious obstacle to acquiring jobs and improving the quality of life. This is precisely what we are trying to solve, ”said Coursera CEO Jeff Maggioncalda. Commercial standard.

“We are working with our university partners to create degrees in addition to our open online learning platform which is high quality, modular, affordable and scalable,” Coursera said in a press release.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was the first institution to offer a full MBA on the platform, which adds a Masters in Computer Science, also offered by Arizona State University. A master’s degree in public health is offered by the University of Michigan in the United States and Imperial College London.

The University of Michigan offers an undergraduate data science course on Coursera.

After more than a decade after the creation of the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), rapid advancements in technology and the speed of data transfer have enabled unprecedented growth in the number of learners enrolled in these fields and promise world-class quality education for those who have the will, but not the resources, to learn.

Certification courses on the platform involve recorded videos and interactive quizzes, but the curriculum also features live lectures and interaction with faculty and co-students, which is “on par with the best standards in the world.” ‘global education,’ says Maggioncalda.

Founded in 2012, approximately 150 universities around the world offer 2,000 online courses, which have benefited more than 30 million learners worldwide. In India, the Indian School of Business is the only institution to offer a course on the platform. So, although India is at the forefront of online education consumption, Indian institutions have yet to embrace the distance learning model, which Maggioncalda admitted.

“There are certain regulations that make it difficult for an IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) to teach online on our platform,” he added.

In a country like India where more than a third of its population is in the 15-24 age group, making it the most employable age group, access to an education of Quality is still a long way off, with only 20% of students eligible for higher education, according to the All India Higher Education Survey.

The indigenous online education portal Swayam, developed by the Department of Human Resources, offers 51 courses on its website, 32 of which are related to engineering.

As the data turns to oil, there is growing uncertainty and excitement about what the upcoming new regime has to offer in terms of employment, especially for young people. In India, the youngest developing country, the need is probably the greatest.

With the aim of expanding its presence in India, Coursera has 36 partner companies in the country including Airtel, Axis Bank, Infosys, Tata Communication, Manipal Group, AXA to name a few. It has around 900 partner companies around the world.

Airtel recruits employees who need specialized training in courses related to network technologies and cloud computing, Axis Bank focuses on data analytics, Tata Communications on machine learning and the Internet of Things.
