Former NASA astronaut and Purdue alumnus to speak at Purdue Honors College


WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – Dick Covey, a former NASA astronaut and former CEO of the United Space Alliance, will speak as part of the Purdue University Honors College Visiting Scholar Series. The event will take place on November 2 at 6 p.m. in the Hall of Honor inside the Honors College and Residences North building.

With over 646 hours of recorded space hours, Covey will share his experiences of space flight and discuss the future of space exploration in a post-pandemic world.

A regular at West Lafayette, Covey received a Masters of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Purdue in 1969 after earning an undergraduate degree in Astronautical Engineering from the US Air Force Academy. Covey continued to serve with the United States. Air Force as a fighter pilot and then joined the NASA space program. He has commanded and served on NASA flights including Endeavor to maintain and repair the Hubble Space Telescope; STS-38, a mission classified by the Ministry of Defense in 1990; and STS 51-I, another spacecraft repair mission in 1985. In 2004, Covey was inducted into the American Astronaut Hall of Fame. Most recently, he served as President and CEO of United Space Alliance, President of Boeing Service Co. and Co-Chair of the Inflight Return Working Group.

Covey’s presentation on November 2 will include the recognition of three astronaut scholarships awarded by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. These awards are sponsored by Kathy and Dick Covey and the CoveyLove Legacy Fund, Jim Hays in honor of Purdue astronaut Gene Cernan, and Marc and Sharon Hagle.

This year Astronaut scholars, Joseph Kirchhoff, John Putziger and Abigale Sipes, were announced earlier this semester. These students attended the annual Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Gala in August and were awarded financial scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year. The public is invited to attend this event live. This event is part of the Specialized College Visiting Fellows Program, which offers engaging events with interdisciplinary academics from a wide variety of fields.
