Fred Watson appointed interim AD to replace Reginald Ruffin at Miles College

Fred Watson, head basketball coach and deputy athletic director at Miles College, has been appointed interim AD to replace Reginald Ruffin who announced this week he is leaving to become AD and football head coach at Tuskegee University.

A search for the next football head coach is underway.

“Coach Watson has led the Miles varsity basketball team through several successful seasons through hard work, dedication and successful recruiting efforts,” said Bobbie Knight, President of Miles College. “… I have no doubts that Coach Watson will continue to lead the Miles College track and field program with the same level of excellence throughout this transition.” “

Watson said: “I am extremely grateful to Chairman Knight and the Board of Directors for this incredible opportunity and their confidence in me. The commitment to the overall pursuit of academic excellence and the unwavering support of athletics brought me to Miles College. I can’t wait to take advantage of the amazing things happening in college and within the athletic department under President Knight’s leadership. “

Watson is in his third season as assistant athletic director and head coach of men’s basketball.

Prior to coaching at Miles, Watson spent 16 seasons as a coach at his alma mater, Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, and always had his teams among the elite of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC ) and at the national level.

Watson holds a BS in Therapeutic Recreation from Benedict College and an MS in Sports Administration and Management from American Public University in Charles Town, West Virginia. He is currently a doctoral student in sports leadership.
