Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Institute, which will begin its academic session in 2021, will offer courses in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, digital media and marketing.

These undergraduate courses will be led by Shailesh Kumar, who is the chief data scientist for Reliance Jio.

The institute formed an advisory board of seven members, prior to launch. Apart from Ambanis, the board of directors includes members: Jean-Lou Chameau, president of Caltech; Michael Keller from Stanford, Rick Levin from Yale, Subra Suresh from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Nadhmi A Al-Nasr from the NEOM habitat project in Saudi Arabia; Frank J Mulhem and Vinayak P Dravis of Northwestern University.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Development (HRD) had granted “eminence” status to the Jio Institute even before it became operational. The institute was however under the heat since it was the only institute proposed to be granted this status in 2018. This status would have been granted solely on the basis of future prospects.

The institute is expected to hire academic staff and prepare a study program by October 2020, ET reported, citing the company’s response to the government’s ECE.

Jio Institute wants global academic experts to be part of its faculty. It is in talks with universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Northwestern University and Nanyang Technological University to bring in experts and faculty mentors to the institute. .

The institute is expected to have a sprawling 800-acre campus and will be located in Navi Mumbai.
