The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given the Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy, Enugu, the green light to continue its undergraduate programs.
This decision officially ended the college’s former status as a monotechnical university, awarding only top national degrees in dental technology and therapy.
With the current approval, which also included the expansion of the university programs of the colleges, the institution, together with the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, will now award degrees in various university programs accredited by the NUC.
According to a letter dated February 10, the commission authorized the relevant authorities to organize degree programs within the college premises with FUTO as a mentor, thereby confirming the college’s status as an authorized degree-granting institution. .
However, the college’s recent authorization as custodian of degree programs was a consequence of National Assembly Law No.8 of 2017 which had so far empowered the college to award degrees.
This legal framework, labeled: Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy (Etablishment) Act, 2017, propelled the college’s affiliation to FUTO after President Muhammadu Buhari’s assent on December 5, 2017.
NUC approval that authorized the college’s graduation status follows a team of 12 visiting the school’s campus on December 14, 2020 during a facility assessment visit of the institution.
Led by Tokunbo Akeredolu, the team, at the end of the visit, declared themselves satisfied with the college’s level of compliance with the imposed standards as well as the quality of the infrastructure it has set up.
The team also praised the institution’s authorities for what it described as their team spirit which it said has enabled them to make notable progress in recent times.
But despite this laudable achievement, the college has not yet wavered in its avowed commitment to be officially ranked among Nigeria’s other federal universities.
Founded in 1955 in Lagos by order of the Queen of England, the school was transferred to Enugu in 1982.
