poonga nagar: a student arrested for trafficking ganja | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore: Police in Peelamedu arrested a student in Poonga Nagar near the city’s airport on Friday night for trafficking ganja. Another student is on the run. Students have created WhatsApp groups called “Dope” and “Stuff” to provide ganja to students. There were over 80 members in the group.
The arrested student is V Gokul, 21, from Dindigul district who was studying an undergraduate course at a private college of arts and sciences in the city. Another student, Yugesh, from Theni district, was in a PG program at a university.
At around 4pm on Friday, Deputy Inspector M Rajkumar and his team, while carrying out a vehicle check on Avinashi Road, arrested two students walking on the road suspiciously. Asked about their contact details, they gave contradictory information. “Immediately we checked them and found a packet of ganja. When questioned, they said they bought the package from a student named Gokul,” a policeman said.
The police team learned that Gokul was residing in a rented house in Poonga Nagar and went there. “We found 950g of ganja in the house and arrested Gokul,” the officer said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Yugesh was Gokul’s roommate. “Yugesh got some ganja from Theni. Each time they were in possession of ganja, the duo created a WhatsApp group and informed members of the contraband’s availability, price and distribution location. After selling the lot, they deleted the group. From Gokul’s mobile phone, the details of the group members have been collected, and all of them are students,” Deputy Inspector Rajkumar said. The police filed a case against Gokul under the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS). He was brought before an investigating judge on Saturday morning and taken into custody later. Further investigation is underway. tnn
