“Celebrating a 250th anniversary is a tremendous achievement in the history of American education,” Salem Chairman of the Board of Directors Elizabeth Denton Baird mentioned. “Constantly, throughout 250 years, Salem continued to push the boundaries for women and girls at every turn. Salem Academy and College graduates are innovators, visionaries, changemakers, and problem solvers.”

To celebrate the 250and important step, Salem is hosting a multi-day commemoration called RISE that began with a health leadership forum on April 21thwhich included panel discussions focusing on various career options, emerging issues in health leadership and collaboration across disciplines. from Salem Health Leadership Forum included remarks from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and a keynote address from Mayo Clinic Health System President Dr. Prathibha Varkey.
In collaboration with its 250and Founder’s Day Anniversary Call, Salem held the inauguration of its 22nd president, Dr. Summer McGee, PhD, CPH. During his inaugural address, Dr. McGee reflected on history but also set the tone for the future of Salem Academy and College.
“Salem Academy and College are institutions with a rich history of boldness and innovation. Our founding was based on disruption, pushing the boundaries of what education was and who could access it,” said Dr. McGee. “If our Moravian ancestors had accepted the status quo and had not aspired to reach everyone, Salem would never have been established.
“Looking to the future, Salem will reach new student populations, develop new programs and expand opportunities for growth in our student population,” she said. “Our goal is to reach new audiences and tell the story of Salem which includes brilliant students and committed teachers. Salem will secure and secure its place not only as the first such educational institution, but as the best.”
On April 23RISE continues with from Salem Reunion weekend for graduates, the 250and Feast of Love and Candlelight Service celebrating the founding of Salem Academy and College, a tradition in from Salem Moravian heritage community and a special celebration for the Salem College Class of 2020. In addition, Salem presented a new book called “Journey to Salem” during RISE. The book tells the story of a group of Salem former students, staff and friends who have left Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on September 28, 2021 to recreate the historic 500-mile voyage to SalemNC which resulted in from Salem foundation in 1772.
